The 'Microsoft Security' Phone Call: How to Defeat Tech Support Scammers
The phone rings, and a polite person with a professional-sounding background (you can hear other 'agents' talking) introduces themselves. They say they are from the 'Microsoft Security Team' or 'Windows Technical Department.' They tell you that your computer has been sending out error signals and is currently infected with a dangerous 'Zeus' virus that is stealing your banking data.
This is the legendary tech support vishing scam. It has been around for over a decade, but in 2026, it is more convincing than ever. The scammers use 'number spoofing' to make your Caller ID say 'Microsoft' or 'Apple' to earn your trust immediately.
The Script: How They Trick You
The scammer will guide you to your computer and ask you to open a program called 'Event Viewer.' They will point to a list of 'Errors' and 'Warnings' (which are actually completely normal background tasks every computer has) and tell you these are 'viruses.'
Once you are sufficiently scared, they offer to fix it for a 'discounted fee' of £150. They will ask you to download a remote access tool so they can 'clean the drive.' In reality, they are installing malware to watch your screen while you log into your bank.
Microsoft's Official Policy
Microsoft, Apple, and Google **never** monitor individual computers for viruses and they will **never** call you on the phone. They do not have your phone number, and they do not care about your 'error logs.' If someone calls you claiming to be tech support, they are a criminal.
What to Do If You Answered
The second they mention your computer, hang up the phone. Do not argue. Do not try to 'scam the scammer.' Just end the call. If you have already allowed them onto your computer, turn it off and take it to a local, trusted computer shop to have it wiped. Call your bank and tell them you were the victim of a tech support scam so they can monitor your accounts.
The Golden Rule
Unsolicited tech support is always a scam. No matter how professional they sound or what 'proof' they show you on your screen, hang up and protect your money.
